An Annual National Cultural event held on the island of Providenciales every Boxing Day!
Maskanoo is an annual cultural event organised by the Turks and Caicos Hotel and Tourism Association (TCHTA) and the Cultural & Arts Commission (CAC), showcasing the best of the islands’ cultural heritage. It mixes Junakoo with Masquerade to create “Maskanoo” and has its roots in the ‘Masses’; a masquerade tradition that fuses traditional African culture with costumed balls held in the colonial era. On Provo, Maskanoo originated with workers brought by the Bermudian salt rakers to work the salt ponds of Salt Cay, and South Caicos two hundred years ago.
David Bowen, a brilliant artist and revered Turks & Caicos Islander, has worked tirelessly to promote Maskanoo as a National Cultural event. He was, and remains, the driving force between the first Maskanoo event in 2009, reviving this tradition to become a regular annual event.
We hope you enjoyed every minute and to everyone who took part and who made this fabulous event possible, we thank you!
